The removal of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare as Inspector General of Police (IGP) would represent one of the errors made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, according to Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament.

Dr. Dampare’s outstanding performance as IGP, according to Mr. Agyapong, who is running for NPP president in 2024 and is the Member of Parliament for Assin Central.

In a weekend radio interview with Kumasi-based Kessben FM, Mr. Agyapong claimed that since Dr. Dampare assumed the position of IGP, there has been a marked decline in robberies nationwide.

His request comes in response to the public’s interest in the work of the special parliamentary committee formed to look into the alleged plot by some top police officials to assassinate Dampare, which was allegedly caught on video.

According to Mr. Agyapong, Dr. Dampare is among the best IGPs Ghana has ever had, thus the government shouldn’t succumb to any attempt to have him removed.

“How many times have you heard of armed robbery since Dampare was made IGP? People were being killed and their money was being stolen in broad daylight. How many times have you seen this since Dampare came into office? Under him, the rate of armed robbery has reduced drastically”, he said.

“Since I became the head of the Defence and Interior Committee, we have had a number of IGPs, and this man (Dampare), what he has done, I don’t think we are being fair to him,” he said, believing that the IGP was not being handled fairly. Avoid the error of removing him.

Mr. Agyapong added that the IGP had changed the police headquarters such that it now appears to be so spotless and lovely.

“I contacted one of the guys from my village who is on the leaked tape and yelled at him. We dislike change,” he continued.

You’ll see that Dr. Dampare has done well if you visit the police headquarters. He and I once got into a fight over his inaction after J.B. Danquah’s murderer confessed to him, but he’s done pretty well since then.
