In downstream villages in the Greater Accra, Eastern, and Volta Regions, last year’s “extensive” flooding caused by the discharging of excess water from the Akosombo Dam, President Nana Akufo-Addo has reiterated his government’s “continued commitment to providing support.”

President Akufo-Addo addressed the crowd during the 67th Independence Day celebration on March 6, 2024, in Koforidua, Eastern Region, stating that the spill was “a necessary action which was taken to maintain the dam’s structural integrity”.

He stated that in accordance with the 2024 budget, the government has allocated GH¢220 million, of which GH¢80 million has already been made available by the Ministry of Finance to help in the continuing efforts to restore the impacted villages.

“The government will stop at nothing to restore normalcy to the lives and livelihoods of all affected people”, the president promised.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, strongly criticized the president for omitting to address the issue in his most recent State of the Nation Address to Parliament.
