The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) responsible for Corporate Services, Dr. Bossman Asare, has urged Ghanaians to maintain composure in light of the missing Commission equipment.

He claims that nothing important that might jeopardize the integrity of the votes on December 7 is on the lost computers.

Following his refutation of allegations made by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over a number of EC Biometric Verification Devices (BVD) going missing, he provided the guarantee.

In an explanation of the allegations made by the opposing party, the European Commission stated during a news conference on March 20, 2024, that just five of its computers had gone missing.

On Tuesday, March 19, the Parliamentary Minority Caucus said that seven BVDs from the EC’s office needed to be looked into.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, the Minority Leader, urged the Police Service and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to look into the situation right now.

However, Dr. Bossman Asare explained during the press conference at the Commission’s offices that all of the organization’s biometric equipment are kept in a safe location, reaffirming the Commission’s preparedness for the elections in December.

According to him, the missing gadgets were a few laptops that didn’t have any private data that would have compromised the integrity of the December elections.

“We are fully ready for the election and we can confirm that five laptops have been stolen and these are laptops that do not contain any information about anyone. They do not contain information, so there are no risks.”

Addressing a confusion amongst a section of the public with regards to BVDs and BVRs, he said “we are also picking up information that people are contradicting the BVDs and the BVRs. BVDs are used for verification and BVRs are for registration.

“You will have to connect the two devices before you can use them and with the BVDs, they are used only when we are going to vote. If someone steals the BVDs, they cannot use them and we want to emphasize that five laptops are missing and we are working with the police to retrieve them,” he noted.
