The Ashanti Regional Deputy Communications Officer for the opposition, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo over his refusal to reshuffle his ministers, describing his appointees as “Area Boys” for the monumental failure to run the economy.
Speaking at OTEC FM’s Dwaberem political talkshow monitored by Ghanatodayonline, the communicator stated the implementation of the reshuffle would have injected new blood into the government to revive the ailing economy while at the same time, benefitting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) members themselves.
“Backing the president to reject the reshuffle call means the current system is appropriate and I challenge you to tell Akufo-Addo the simple truth that if someone is removed another cannot be appointed” he stated, with reference to one Asaase Gyimah on NPP member on the show.
According to him, the country’s economic ratings has taken a nose-dive “B-” to “CCC” by FITCH with the highest inflation of 31.7 percent of recent years, citing high cost of food items, fuel prices as well as social services. He pointed out that for the President to maintain the under-performance of his appointees under the present harsh economic condition is a clear indication all hope is lost and Ghana is heading towards doom.
Asafo-Agyei declared, before the President could make any appointment, competency would be one fundamental basis but the call for the ministerial reshuffle indicates the NPP indeed, has not got the men as we are made to believe.
He disclosed the so-called economic stability in 2017,2018 and 2019 by the government was backed by the condilitionalities spelt out by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from the traunches of loan secured by the NDC government in 2015.
He revealed President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia steered the full affairs of governance in the late 2019 and 2020 when IMF modalities changed exposing their gross incompetence.
The NDC communicator justified his argument, according to him, Akufo-Addo during his 2016 campaign, introduced some of his men holding long chains of degrees from foreign universities in his usual jargon, “we have the men”.
However, six years on, the ‘men’ have proved to be inept hence classifying such appointees as “Area Boys” is in the right direction, he concluded.
