“When they say they have the men, you see where they are. They should look for Kwame Pianim immediately. He is the one who can save them and lead this team, they should go and get Ishmael Yamson and Sam Jonah the best brains of our country. Because this job is equivalent to the 1983 challenge, it’s not child play” these are the words of Hon Isaac Adongo.

The Deputy Ranking member on the Finance Committee in Parliament and Member of Parliament (MP) for Bolgatanga Central Hon Isaac Adongo has chastised the Ghana’s economic management team lead by the Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia for sending the country to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a monetary programme.

A letter signed by the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, and dated July 1st, 2022 shows that there had already been a communique among the IMF boss, Kristalina Georgieva and President Akufo-Addo. conveying government’s choice to have interaction the Fund.

“The President of the Republic, Nana Add Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has approved the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta to begin formal engagements with the International Monetary Fund to guide a monetary programme Cabinet at an assembly on June 30th, 2022, supported government’s choice to pursue a monetary programme from the Fund.

“The engagement with the IMF will seek to provide balance of payment support as part of a broader effort to quicken Ghana’s build back in the face of challenges induced by the Covid-19 pandemic and, recently, the Russia Ukraine crises.” The statement added.

The IMF team will begin in-person meetings with the Government of Ghana on Wednesday 6th July, 2022.

Addressing the media in Parliament the maverick MP said the team leading the negotiations don’t have the needed skills to get better deal for the country.

He says now that we are at the IMF you want this man (Dr Bawumia) to lead the economic management team? The head of the economic management team is not constitutional imperative and I saw signs of it when they went to take the decision at Peduase.

“You saw who was chairing, is it not Osafo Maafo who chaired that meeting, the President was even out of town so whether it was a cabinet, it was the economic management team, who chairs the cabinet when the President is not around, the Vice President. The cabinet was there seriously deciding whether we should go to the IMF or not. The President was out and the Vice President was nowhere,” Hon Adongo revealed.

There has been calls from some economist and the former president John Mahama to let the Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to step aside from the government negotiations team with the IMF.
