The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) President, Mr. Angel Carbonu, has listed the major issues facing the education sector that need to be addressed immediately by Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister-designate.

This follows the nomination of the Tamale South MP as the Minister-designate for Education by President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Carbonu emphasized the importance of clear policy and prompt stakeholder participation, especially with regard to the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) program’s execution.

NAGRAT is prepared to participate in conversations to guarantee the successful implementation of educational policy, he added, adding that resolving these concerns should be the minister-designate’s top priority once confirmed.

He stated in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM

“The immediate priority is the Free SHS programme, which has been a topical issue in the news.

The new government has promised to address it through stakeholder engagement to reach a national consensus on the way forward.

We are looking forward to that consultation forum so we can contribute meaningfully to the discussion.

That should be the immediate focus,” Mr Carbonu stated.

He also discussed systemic issues that still affect Ghana’s education system, such as inadequate facilities, low teacher pay, and the deterioration of fundamental education standards brought on by years of disregard, in addition to Free SHS.

“The general challenge in education includes infrastructure, teacher welfare, and declining standards in basic education due to neglect.

These are longstanding issues, and we hope the minister-designate will take decisive steps to resolve them,” Mr Carbonu added.
