The National Peace Council’s chairman, Rev. Dr. Eric Adu-Gyamfi, has made it clear that the council serves as a mediator and upholds objectivity in situations involving the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.

The National Peace Council has not taken a position on the contentious measure, Rev. Dr. Adu-Gyamfi said, emphasizing the significance of maintaining impartiality in their capacity as mediators.

The council is devoted to maintaining its impartiality and is attentively observing the events that are taking place, even though they have been contacted by stakeholders looking for their opinion on the matter.

“We don’t have a position on the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill because we are mediators; we don’t take sides on issues like this. There are several issues that have come to us that people expected us to take sides, but realized it was important to remain neutral when they later came for conflict resolution. We are waiting to see how things will unfold, so we know whether to mediate or intervene in the event of a conflict,” the National Peace Council Chairman clarified on TV3.

On February 28, the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Act, 2024, was enacted by Parliament, making LGBTQ+ advocacy, financing, promotion, and activities illegal. While individuals who promote the legislation might face sentences of three to five years in prison, offenders could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years.
