Justin Frimpong Kodua, General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), blamed the party’s loss in the Assin North by-election on running out of time to promote Charles Opoku to voters.
Frimpong Kodua stated on the Asaase Breakfast Show that the NPP will rethink its strategy and retake the seat in 2024.
“As a party, right after the Kumawu by-election, we didn’t have enough time, we had to go quickly for primaries to elect our candidate, and yet Charles Opoku was elected within the shortest possible time.
“So, it is true we couldn’t market him well. The time was short, as against a candidate who had run in Election 2020 (James Gyakye Quayson),” he said.
Following the Supreme Court’s annulment of the 2020 elections held in the Assin North constituency, which Mr. Quayson won, a by-election was held.
After the by-election on Tuesday, June 27, 2023, James Gyakye Quayson received 17,245 votes, or 57.56% of the vote, while Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) received 12,630 votes, or 42.15%.
Sefenu Bernice Enyonam, a candidate for the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), received only 87 votes, or 0.29% of the total cast.
