The NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, promised the trainees they would receive their allowance, but the Coalition of Concerned Nurses and Midwives trainees have discovered that no money has been given to them.

The pledge was made by Dr. Bawumia during an address to nurses and midwives on May 14, 2024, International Nurses Day in Accra.

“I wish to assure the nursing trainees that by Thursday this week, the Controller [And Accountant-General] is transferring an amount of GHC177 million to the Ministry of Health to pay the trainee allowances,” Dr Bawumia said.

The vice president’s guarantee comes after an event in the Bono East region when a final-year trainee nurse questioned Dr. Bawumia in public when their allowances would be paid while engaging with the youth.

The Ministry of Health has not yet notified the midwives and student nurses of any payment, though.

The coalition declared in a statement released on Monday, May 20, that “no payments have been made nor information on the disbursement process has been provided despite the Vice President’s announcement over nineteen days ago.”

“The government’s failure to address these arrears comprehensively continues to burden our future healthcare professionals.”

The coalition also emphasized that the GHC177 million Dr. Bawumia promised is “woefully inadequate” to cover the amount of months owing them.
