Kingsford Alban Sumana Bagbin has been sworn in as the Speaker of the Fourth Republic of Ghana’s 9th Parliament.
Bagbin continued to oversee Ghana’s parliamentary affairs with the ceremony on January 7, 2025, which came after President-elect John Dramani Mahama endorsed him.
With the swearing-in, Bagbin, who was Speaker of the 8th Parliament, solidifies his reputation as a key player in the country’s legislature.
Cassiel Ato Forson, the recently confirmed Majority Leader, nominated Bagbin as the Speaker at the start of the session. “I move that Hon Alban Bagbin do take the chair of this House as the Speaker of the 9th Parliament” Ato Forson stated.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who expressed disapproval of the nomination procedure due to the president-elect’s lack of consultation, seconded the resolution. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk of Parliament, however, rejected these worries as unrelated to the technicalities.
Bagbin’s status was formally confirmed when Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkornoo administered the Oath of Office.
Bagbin stressed unity and promised impartiality in directing the House’s operations in his acceptance address.
