Residents of Sabronom in the Ahafo Ano South East District of the Ashanti claim that the village is on the verge of disintegrating as a result of certain illegal miners, sometimes known as “galamseyers,” invading and destroying farms.
They claim that, in the name of looking for gold, the galamseyers have taken control of the local government school and are trashing its grounds.
On October 10, 2022, a community opinion leader named Peter Shai said that the galamseyers had also broken into the True Faith Church using galamsey equipment in an interview with Kumasi-based OTEC 102.9 FM’s afternoon political program “Dwabrem”.
“These facilities we are talking about are in the middle of the community but these illegal miners are bent on destroying them. All our attempts to stop them in the last few weeks have been proven futile as the police in the area have refused to act on our reports”. He said.
“The area acting as the market is another landmark that has been impacted by the dishonest operations of illicit mining in the town. As we speak, machines are here trashing the region, and I must say we are helpless.”
However, Mr. Shai revealed that some armed guards are protecting the illegal miners to keep local teenagers from confronting them.
He urged president Akuffo to take urgent action against this threat and save the community from going extinct.
