The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is the chairman of the National Elections Security Taskforce (NESTF), which met at a high level with political party leaders to discuss security plans for the general elections in December.
The purpose of the Thursday, November 21, 2024, meeting, which was held at the Police Headquarters in Accra, was to inform political leaders of the last security measures put in place to guarantee a smooth election process.
Speaking at the meeting, the IGP emphasized the Taskforce’s dedication to professionalism, equity, and rigorous legal compliance.
“We assure you of our dedication to creating a secure environment for the elections. Our actions will be impartial and guided by the law and anyone who violates these laws will be made to face the law” the IGP said.
After months of campaigns across the country, political leaders were also asked to express their security worries. The IGP cited the political parties’ confidence on the Ghana Police Service during their mostly incident-free internal elections and by-elections as evidence of their faith in the Service as the primary law enforcement organization under the Taskforce.
The IGP recognized the necessity of continuing this trend and praised the political parties for their efforts to promote calm campaigning. He reassured the leaders that there are sufficient safeguards in place to stop any disruptions and that the security plans for election day are strong.
However, the IGP reminded political stakeholders of the electoral process’s reality, pointing out that although there will be 801 parliamentary candidates and 12 presidential candidates, only one of them and 276 parliamentary candidates will win.
“We urge you to prepare for both victory and defeat. Ultimately, the power lies with the Ghanaian people.
The true winner of this election is Ghana, and when Ghana wins, Africa and the black race win,” he stated.
Additional issues expressed by the representatives of the political parties about the electoral procedures were also addressed by an Electoral Commission (EC) representative.
In his closing remarks, IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare urged all parties, candidates, and the Electoral Commission to exercise responsibility and patriotism while adhering to the law in order to guarantee a successful and peaceful election.
The Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, and Ghana Armed Forces are the other members of the National Elections Security Taskforce. They committed to upholding their professional and impartial mandate at the end of the meeting, and they urged the political parties to embrace love, peace, and unity as the nation prepares to cast its ballots.
