The status of the Agenda 111 hospital projects has been criticized by President John Dramani Mahama, who claims that despite large financial investments, not a single one of the “knee-jerk” responses to the Covid-19 outbreak is operating.

On Thursday, February 27, he gave his first State of the Nation Address of his second term and expressed dissatisfaction that the effort, which was intended to strengthen healthcare infrastructure, had failed to produce any operational facilities.

He disclosed that more than $400 million has already been invested in the initiatives, but the results are not very impressive.

“If this amount had been used appropriately, it would have completed and made operational about 22 of these hospitals,” he stated.

President Mahama stressed that this inefficiency has left many communities still struggling with inadequate healthcare access.

He told Ghanaians that his government is willing to use a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) strategy to guarantee the hospitals’ completion and operationalization, acknowledging the significance of the project.

He pointed out that the nation’s healthcare requirements cannot be disregarded and that immediate action is needed to provide these vital facilities.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, former President Akufo-Addo launched the Agenda 111 initiative, which sought to fill inadequacies in Ghana’s healthcare system by building 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric institutions.

But as there are now no finished projects operating, President Mahama promised to act swiftly to guarantee that these desperately needed hospitals provide the services to the public as envisioned.
