The heads of schools nationwide have been encouraged by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to protect pupils’ religious liberties and make sure they can freely practice their beliefs.

He emphasized that every child in Ghana has the constitutionally provided freedoms and rights, including the freedom to profess their religion.

Speaking during the Ambariyya Muslim sect’s 2025 Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in Tamale on Monday, March 31, the Minister reaffirmed the significance of honoring religious diversity in educational establishments.

He emphasized that rules that prevent kids from practicing their faith should not be enforced by institutions.

His comments come in response to the Ghana Muslim Students Association of Ghana.

The association was disappointed that Saint Roses Senior High School in Akwatia, Eastern Region, had decided to forbid Muslim students from celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr at home, even though the Ghana Education Service had issued an official instruction permitting them to do so.

Minister Iddrisu responded to the situation by restating the government’s commitment to protecting the constitutional rights of students.

“I want to announce as Ghana’s Minister of Education that every child and every Ghanaian is entitled to the full benefit of all the rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, and therefore no school has the right to deny any Ghanaian child the right to practise their faith,” he declared.

He further called on all educational institutions to acknowledge and respect religious freedoms, ensuring that no student is subjected to discrimination based on their beliefs.

“All schools must recognise and respect the right of every Ghanaian child to profess and practise their religion,” he stated.
