The Electoral Commission’s Chairperson, Jean Mensa, states that only qualified candidates would be allowed to run for office by carefully reviewing the nomination documents that presidential aspirants submit.
This was announced by Madam Jean Mensa in a press conference prior to political party leaders and other interested parties submitting their presidential nomination documents.
“As part of the Commission’s efforts to ensure a transparent, credible, and accountable process, the Commission has developed a detailed checklist that embodies the criteria to be satisfied by a presidential candidate as prescribed by law. The checklist will guide the scoring and awarding of marks by a team established by the Commission to scrutinize and review each nomination form submitted”, Mrs. Mensa stated.
She noted that the practice was not particularly new as far as the verification process was concerned.
“As in 2020, the Commission has established two teams which have been tasked to review all forms submitted. The technical team has been tasked to review forms to ensure that the presidential candidates meet the qualifications as set out by law,” she explained.
“The responsibility of scrutinizing the voter ID cards of presidential candidates and their supporters” was assigned to the IT team, which she claimed was the second, in order to confirm that these individuals were currently registered voters.
Both groups, according to Madam Jean Mensa, had received the necessary training to enable them to carry out their legal responsibilities.
“Transparent, fair, and peaceful” is how she said it, confidently.
