IGP sets up Investigative team to probe 2020, 2024 election deaths

The President’s letter ordering investigations into the deaths relating to the 2020 and 2024 elections has been answered by Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, according to the Chronicle Newspaper.

Per the report, the IGP established a specialized investigative team at the CID Headquarters and provided them with deadlines to complete their work and deliver their findings to him.

The article stated that Chief Superintendent Joseph Nanegbe is the team’s chair and that it is composed of extremely knowledgeable and experienced Ghana Police Service officials.

The article mentioned that the IGP promised the President in his letter that the team will have access to all resources necessary to accomplish the goal.

The paper states that the investigation team’s work will be based on the work that the IGP and his team have previously done on the issue since he took office in 2021. The source hinted that among other important measures, Dr. Akuffo Dampare formed the Cold Case Unit at the CID headquarters upon taking office to guarantee the ongoing investigation of crime-related cases that had not been resolved.

It stated that the Cold Case Unit, which has been investigating the killings connected to the 2020 election, has made significant progress in the case, and that certain individuals are now being prosecuted for the crimes.

On January 10, 2025, President John Mahama instructed the Inspector-General of Police to conduct an investigation into the deaths that took place during the 2020 and 2024 elections.
