Joe Ghartey declares intention to lead NPP in election 2024

At a meeting of the Expanded Regional Executive Committee of the Western Region of the New Patriotic Party(NPP), Hon. Joe Ghartey said that “I would absolutely run for the Flagbearer position for the New Patriotic Party as long as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, God willing.”

Joe Ghartey addressed the crowd during a meeting held in Sekondi-Takoradi on Monday, November 7, 2022, and said he had learned that certain presidential candidates had already visited the region to meet with some delegates.

Although he promised to meet with them shortly, he was also giving them advance warning that he would surely run in the presidential primary.

Joe Ghartey said that he had a radio interview on Takoradi’s Radio 360 around five days prior to the 2020 general elections.

He was asked if he planned to run for office in 2024 by the presenter.

Joe Ghartey, a member of parliament since 2004, declared he would not.

When asked if he would like to become president, Joe Ghartey stated he would say yes.

He said that when he ran for office in 2012, he finished third behind the President and Alan Kyeremanteng. He also stated that, God willing, he will run for office again.

After then, Asaase Radio dispatched a crew from Accra to Takoradi to interview him a few days before the election, Hon. Ghartey informed the crowd.

He was asked the identical question by the presenter, Kojo Mensah, about running for president in 2024, and he replied in the affirmative.

Joe Ghartey informed the crowd that the president had stated in a speech to newly elected MPs that anyone who has declared his intention to run in the presidential primaries would be excluded from his government.

When asked a question, Joe Ghartey said a senior party member advised him to respond with “I’m thinking about it right now.”

Joe Ghartey said to the group that he did not lie or waffle and that speaking the truth had set him free.

He responded in that manner because he had previously given it some thought.

He gave the Region his word that he would undoubtedly return shortly.

Hon. Ghartey has served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Attorney General, and Minister of Justice.
