Amnesty International Ghana has demanded a thorough and comprehensive inquiry into the alleged mistreatment of demonstrators who were taken into custody at the Democracy Hub-organized demonstration against illicit mining.
As stated by citinewsroom.com, the human rights group claims that persistent mistreatment of protesting individuals might worsen the already deteriorating civic space prior to, during, and beyond the next general elections.
“That an independent investigation on this matter be immediately conducted and actions taken to ensure that such injustice and inhumane treatment to citizens of the Republic of Ghana does not happen again” the report stated.
During an interview, Amnesty International Ghana’s Country Director, Genevieve Partington, demanded that the nation’s protest legislation be reviewed in order to guarantee the preservation of people’ rights.
“We are requesting a list of all detained protesters and their station so we can be granted access to them and ensure they receive the basic human rights and necessary care,” the spokesperson stated. We also want everyone who was wrongfully detained to get compensation in accordance with Ghanaian law.
“As we approach the elections in December, it is imperative that the government takes these issues seriously and ensures law and order.”
A violent altercation broke out between protestors and police at the 37 Intersection in Accra as a consequence of a demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub organization to demand swift action against galamsey.
