Chief Biney Hamilton Nixon, the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Deputy Campaign Coordinator for Special Operations, has requested that President Akufo-Addo apologize to the country for the National Cathedral project’s setback.
He issued a warning, saying that the nation may be cursed if the President broke his word.
Chief Biney claimed in a Facebook post that the National Cathedral, which remains incomplete and was once hailed as a symbol of Christian unity, is now commonly seen as a national disgrace.
One of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) projects, the National Cathedral, gave many Ghanaians—especially Christians hope, but it is currently beset with delays and mounting dissatisfaction.
Mr. Biney claims that the early optimism and the current situation are very different from one another.
“What was promised as a symbol of national pride has now become an empty, unfinished site, leaving Ghanaians questioning the leadership and integrity of the project. Some of the church members are secretly expressing doubt about seeing their Pastors on the board.
“Great men of God called on the Christian community to rally behind this project. But today, the entire cathedral has become a scam in the eyes of many. People feel betrayed, and it’s time for the President to address this,” he added.
With barely two months remaining in his term, he voiced grave concerns about the potential long-term effects of the president’s silence on the nation.
“Mr President, you said you would build this cathedral at all costs, but today, we are left with nothing but a hole. You owe an apology to the people of Ghana—and most importantly, to God.
“You demolished judges’ bungalows and left behind an unfinished project. If you leave office without addressing this failure, it could be a curse on the nation and family.”
In order to provide a modern national center of worship and host national events, the National Cathedral’s construction officially got underway in March 2020. As of 2024, the National Cathedral remains unfinished, with 58 million cedis reportedly invested in its development.
