Ayawaso West Wuogon Lydia Seyram Alhassan, a member of parliament, has come under fire from the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) for handing out food during Monday, December 2, 2024’s special vote.
A video captured the MP distributing packed meals to voters during the special polling.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor opened an investigation after the incident caused significant indignation and was deemed unlawful by critics.
Mrs. Alhassan first disputed the accusations, but in a later interview with Citi News, she acknowledged the occurrence and clarified that the voters had requested the food delivery.
However, the activity has been denounced by CHRAJ as an act of corruption.
Speaking to reporters in Accra on Tuesday, December 3, CHRAJ Commissioner Dr. Joseph Whittal declared, “It is not right to treat as in the legal term, to share food, to share money to anybody in the queue in preparation to vote.” It amounts to problems with integrity and corruption.
“So, we have always assumed that that will not be the case, having seen that it could happen even to security officials,” Dr. Whittal continued. We will take that into consideration for our upcoming election because it never happened before but appears to have happened this time.
